The Internet is a global system of computer networks that utilize the TCP/IP suite of protocols to route data from a source to a destination. The Internet Protocol (IP) is used in routing packets from a source to a destination. Each computer on the Internet is identified by an IP address. The IP addresses are in a class A, B, or C. Each of these classes has a different number of computers that can be associated with them. For example, IP Class A is the largest and is associated with the IP addresses from 0 to 127. The Class A IP addresses are the most commonly used and are used to connect to a single computer within a network. The Class B IP addresses are associated with the IP addresses from 128 to 191. The Class C IP addresses are associated with the IP addresses from 192 to 223. The Class C IP addresses are used to connect a computer to a larger number of computers in a network. In certain circumstances, such as, for example, a leased-line connection, the IP address is static. The IP address does not change as the user changes the destination of the IP address. In other circumstances, the IP address is dynamic. The IP address may be dynamically assigned to a computer or to the computer""s physical port as the computer or the port changes location. A typical prior art technique to handle the data packets on the Internet is to transmit the packets on the different segments of the network, i.e., the different physical networks and different sub-networks. For example, the individual physical networks are Internet Service Providers (ISPs) or points of presence of the ISPs. Typically, each physical network has a TCP/IP stack that handles the data packets. When a packet is to be transmitted over the Internet, the destination IP address is checked to determine whether the IP address of the destination is a Class A, B or C address. In general, a Class A or B IP address is associated with one or two computers within a network. A Class C IP address is associated with a larger number of computers within a network.
